This week in Washington, D.C., the Association of Educators of Journalism & Mass Communication has been holding its annual conference.
I had intended to blog the various sessions, but the very attractive host site is something of a digital black hole. I can't get a cell signal in any of the meeting rooms, nor in nearby hallways. And there's no free wi-fi.
Perhaps this is a common situation at academic conferences. There are precious few laptops out in the meeting rooms. All I know for certain is that I've never been to an IRE or NICAR conference without some connectivity.
That said, there have been some interesting sessions, including one featuring Gannett players Phil Currie, Jennifer Carroll and Anne Saul. Gannett has a vision of the digital future of news. I can't say that it's the one true vision that will lead all of journalism to prosperity -- but it might be. And precious few other folks have as concrete plans to accompany their visions. So, I'll go with those who have made visionary decisions and decided to put their money in play. Who else shares their internal training materials? These are definitely interesting folks with a game plan.
