DE up at HBCUs
Inside Higher Ed is reporting on a study by Howard University that says distance education is up at historically black colleges and universities.
Unfortunately, the DE classes that have been added don't necessarily add up to degrees.
Go ahead - read the study report. I'll wait.
...
Here's what I think should be done. State-run HBCUs need to take the ball and run. Winston-Salem State University, for instance, could follow the lead of non-HBCU East Carolina University and develop affordable DE bachelors degrees to serve the underserved black population of North Carolina. There's little point in half measures when it comes to providing education - and leaving DE opportunities in the hands of (pricier) private schools doesn't quite meet the needs.
For states without HBCUs? I'm pretty sure it's OK for non-HBCUs to serve the black community (and others!). You're not going to catch an argument from me.
