Welcome to my occasional ruminations on digital media and its use in journalism and education.

Why "Digital Ed?" Double-entendere. The site is a place for discussion of digital education and my SL avatar's name is Ed. That's it.

Course Redesign

I'm in the oddest session right now. It's on "Course Redesign."

I'm sure this will be a valuable session. The National Center for Academic Transformation has a series of research-based recommendations for redesign.

But here's where things get a little squirrelly. The panel has apparently defined Course Redesign (note the caps) as redesigns that follow the Center's recommendations.

Well, that's just an absurd abuse of the language. NCAT is cool, but they don't get to appropriate as generic a term as course redesign.

Or do they? That just seems silly.

Ah well. Dot Mueller is speaking now on course redesign progress at my former institution, East Carolina University. Certain classes (psychology, for instance) were burdened by unacceptable DFW ("D"/Fail/Withdraw) rates, but following the redesign recommendations has changed that.

AH! Here's a panelist who makes sense. Robert Henshaw has just divorced himself from the idea of NCAT ownership of course redesign. Go Rob! Bonus WLIIA points for common sense and a rescue of the English language.
