Welcome to my occasional ruminations on digital media and its use in journalism and education.

Why "Digital Ed?" Double-entendere. The site is a place for discussion of digital education and my SL avatar's name is Ed. That's it.

HoldTheFrontPage Justifies Journalism in SL

Kudos to HoldTheFrontPage.co.uk for making the case (it seems to require re-statement again and again) for journalism in Second Life. If you don't mind, I'll add my own two cents here: Real people participate in SL, so if we don't cover it, we're missing something. Mainstream journalism already misses much of what goes on in RL minority communities, huge tracts of overseas news, and tends to pander to the lowest common denominator.

But whatever you do, don't tell the SL privacy experts who populate (not 100% - but a vocal segment) the community of SL-enabled educators. Quoting someone from SL is, after all, a violation of the TOS and apparently worthy of some level of condemnation.

Of course, when the growing collection of Democrat candidates for U.S. Prez start stumping in SL, that little rule will evaporate, faster than wiper fluid in a windstorm. BTW, that's no slight against any political party. I expect the Dems to make use of SL's Capitol Hill 1 & 2. I don't expect much Republican presence there. As I've written before, that island is far from politically neutral.
