Welcome to my occasional ruminations on digital media and its use in journalism and education.

Why "Digital Ed?" Double-entendere. The site is a place for discussion of digital education and my SL avatar's name is Ed. That's it.

SL Client goes Open Source

I may be the last blogger on Earth to mention the Linden Labs news-of-the-day, the open-sourcing of the SL client/viewer - but here it is. The CNNMoney.com article gave us a fine heads-up, too. Credit to them.

Of course, we've been awaiting this announcement for some time. It comes as no real surprise.

What I found most interesting was this single sentence:
More recently and still in development, we are moving more of the communications to reliable and cryptographically strong secure channels.

OK - that may be no surprise to the developer crowd, but I was happy to read it. IM should be secure. Financial transactions should definitely be secure. It would add value to SL, to know that Joe Average Hacker won't be intercepting personal communication during a business meeting on - for example - IBM's island.

Good stuff today.
